Familyhealth Associates is an integrated, multidisciplinary private practice specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of attentional, behavioral, depression, anxiety, mood and learning disorders. Under the direction of renowned psychiatrist Alan B. Wachtel, M.D., a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, Familyhealth Associates uses a holistic approach to diagnosing and treating children, adolescents, adults and families.

We are unique in offering the value of a “boutique practice” – timely, highly-personalized, comprehensive and integrated care.

Our treatment team includes board-certified adult and child and adolescent psychiatrists (English and Spanish speakers; men and women), neuropsychologists, clinical psychologists, clinical social workers, and executive functioning coaches. Our services are provided in person and remotely using a secure telehealth platform via a computer or mobile device.

We recognize that children, adolescents and adults with attention deficit disorder, depression, anxiety, mood and other psychiatric disorders learn or work differently, and frequently experience a high degree of stress, confusion, and self-doubt. Their behavior and its ramifications often impact the entire family unit. Our approach uses a biopsychosocial model that addresses the physical, social and emotional well-being of the individual and their family.

Our offices are located in the business district of White Plains in Westchester County and on the Upper East Side of New York City.

Our clinical and administrative staff operates during normal business hours Monday - Friday. Many of our clinicians are also available outside of these hours.

Our Services

Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Diagnosis and Treatment
We believe that coordination and integration of care are essential to successful outcomes. We are committed to our multi-disciplinary approach in which professionals within Familyhealth Associates bring their expertise together for the benefit of each individual/family. We recognize the importance of family and encourage participation of family members at appropriate stages of treatment. Since attentional and other psychiatric disorders have a genetic component, many patients of Familyhealth Associates are multiple members of the same/extended family. We have the resources to address each member separately, by a different team member as appropriate, while integrating the invaluable knowledge of the family and team collaboration.

We recognize that parental involvement is critical to the treatment of children and adolescents. We regularly discuss each child/adolescent’s progress with their parents so that pertinent supports and adjustments may be made. When appropriate, a Familyhealth professional will consult with a child’s school faculty or may visit the school to observe a child in an academic setting. When educational remediation is prescribed, we are available to liaise with the educational therapist and the school. We consult with a patient’s physician and other professionals outside our practice who are working with the patient. We have ongoing relationships with placement consultants, should a higher level of care be needed.

Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluations and Diagnoses

A comprehensive, detailed evaluation by highly trained professionals is the first step in diagnosing emotional, behavioral, developmental, and learning disorders in children, adolescents and adults. Our psychiatrists are neuropsychopharmacologists who specialize in diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric and behavioral disorders.

The initial psychiatric evaluation is to establish a comprehensive diagnosis. For a child or adolescent, the evaluation focuses first on getting to know the patient and their family, and obtaining information from one or more parents. This will include information on current and previous symptoms of concern, screening for potential comorbid psychiatric symptoms/disorders, and reviewing medical, family, developmental, and social histories. Information from a neuropsychological evaluation or teacher reports, if available, may be helpful to review but are not necessary for the evaluation. The last part of the evaluation is to meet the parent(s) to discuss the clinical impressions, treatment recommendations and to address any questions/concerns before we proceed with treatment.

During the evaluation for an adult, we assess current and past signs and symptoms of psychiatric disorders, developmental, psychological and social issues, family history, and treatment history and obtain collateral information, as appropriate.

Pharmacogenomic testing

Our practice offers pharmacogenomic testing using Genomind (cheek swab, no needles needed!) to help reduce the ‘trial and error’ process of treatment selection. The results are reviewed together, empowering our patients to better understand how their DNA affects medication metabolism and potential drug-drug interactions. This form of precision medicine is a useful tool that can help identify successful treatment while mitigating side effects.

Neuropsychological and Educational Diagnostic Testing Evaluations

Our neuropsychologists provide in-depth, comprehensive diagnostic evaluations using a full battery of neuropsychological testing materials. In-school observation may be part of this process. Based on the diagnosis, they create educational and treatment plans that address the unique needs of each individual. Test results may be shared by parents with their child’s school and other professionals working with their child.

Medication Management

Once a patient is diagnosed with a disorder, we answer all questions and communicate options (medication and non-medication) with the patient and, if appropriate, their family. If a patient would benefit from medication, we may recommend the use of third-party pharmacogenomic testing as a tool to determine the individual’s receptivity to specific medications. We practice evidence-based medicine and consult with our patients’ primary care clinicians, outside therapists and schools, as appropriate. We order laboratory or other testing when indicated.

Our board-certified psychiatrists recommend the best, most advanced medications with maximum efficacy and safety, with the fewest potential side effects, as customized for each patient. We have established relationships with specialized pharmacies that may provide medications at the best prices.

Prescribed medication is closely monitored and adjusted, as appropriate. We recommend incorporating physical exercise, balanced nutrition, and good sleep habits into daily life. We encourage the inclusion of various forms of therapies, as appropriate, to maximize successful outcomes.

Psychotherapy

Our psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and social workers provide psychotherapy to children, teens, adults, couples, and families to address depression, anxiety, mood and other disorders. We help children recognize and change detrimental behavioral patterns and learn healthier behavior. In our treatment of adolescents, we focus on the development of the emerging adult within each teen. Individual, couple and family therapies are available to address complex interpersonal and social dynamics. As an integrated multidisciplinary team, we collaborate closely with the patient’s entire team.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)

What is CBT? Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a practical, evidence-based approach that helps you identify and change unhelpful thought patterns and behaviors. By focusing on the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and actions, CBT empowers you to develop healthier coping strategies and build resilience. It’s a collaborative and goal-oriented process designed to address challenges such as anxiety, depression, stress, and more, offering tools to create lasting positive change.

Executive Function Coaching

Our executive function coaches teach students and adults how to organize, plan, prioritize, manage time, maintain focus, self-assess, and study/work efficiently. We assist in development of self-management skills for success at school, work and home.

We do not offer a Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) program.

FAQs

  • Familyhealth Associates is committed to providing the best and most advanced care to our patients. For this reason, we do not participate in any health management organizations (HMOs), and payment is due at the time of service in the form of cash, check or major credit card. For ongoing treatment, you may complete an authorization form to permit us to automatically charge your credit card after each session.

Our billing coordinator will provide you with a paid insurance receipt containing all the necessary information to submit to your insurance carrier for reimbursement. Furthermore, our administrative staff will assist you in obtaining reimbursement by providing you with supportive documents as requested. It is important to note that we will always remain within the parameters of all ethical requirements.

Note on Testing: It has been our experience that certain insurance companies require pre-approval for any type of testing. If you or your child is scheduled for an evaluation, it is recommended that you contact your insurance company in advance.

  • We suggest that you discuss the fact that you have noticed that he/she is having difficulties at school, problems with friends or just feeling sad. Explain that he/she will be meeting with some people who are specialists in helping children learn, have fun, and feel better. You may want to assure younger children that, unlike a visit to the pediatrician, there will be no physical exams or needles.

When working with children, our goal is to assist parents in their role as therapeutic agents and advocates. Thus, parents’ full cooperation and support is engaged. We offer several services to parents and children.

At your request, and when indicated, a Familyhealth clinician will arrange to visit your child’s school for observation of the child in an academic setting, or for a meeting with faculty or staff. Please note, however, that although we encourage school involvement, we do not release written information or have verbal contact with any school personnel without your written authorization.

If educational remediation is prescribed, we will maintain an active dialogue with the educational therapist of your choice. Additionally, if we feel it would benefit your child, we are available to consult with any other professionals.

In our treatment of adolescents, where boundaries are critical, we insure that the therapeutic alliance is protected. Familyhealth therapists are experienced in working with issues unique to the adolescent.

  • Diagnostic evaluations are administered by psychologists using a set of standardized tests. These tests provide an in-depth assessment of cognitive and behavioral functions, intelligence, attention, memory, learning skills, perceptual/motor abilities and personality. When scored and interpreted, these tests provide critical information allowing us to diagnose disorders and recommend appropriate treatment options.

Evaluations are scheduled in accordance with the patient’s attention span and ability to remain on task. These assessments are usually administered during two sessions with approximately four hours allotted for each; additional meetings may be scheduled if needed to complete the process at no additional cost. Most adults and older adolescents are able to complete the process in one full day, if requested.

The evaluator will discuss these options with you before beginning the evaluation, as well as directions for lunch, breaks, and any other concerns you may have.

During the reporting conference, the results of the evaluation will be explained and discussed in depth. Recommendations for compensatory strategies may be indicated, and/or referrals for pharmacology, psychotherapy, and/or educational assistance. You will have the opportunity to ask any questions or voice any concerns.

  • Our psychiatrists specialize in the management of all psychotropic drugs. Before the physician prescribes stimulant medications, the patient will be asked to schedule cardiac testing. This is a precaution to rule out any cardiac abnormalities which may be exacerbated by certain medications.

Patients who are prescribed medication at our offices are closely monitored and required to adhere to a strict supervision policy. The patient may be asked to keep a log with a list of positive or negative side effects, rebounding, and the general efficacy of the medication. In the case of a child, parents and teachers will be asked to assist us in determining the effectiveness of the medication.

  • Execcutive Functioning (EF) is difficult to define, but can best be understood as a set of cognitive (thought-related) processes involved in self-directed behavior. We can observe our EF system at work when we make decisions, confront novel situations, solve problems, and plan our day. This system is so much a part of our lives that we only really notice it when it isn’t working properly.

Along with issues of inattention and impulsivity, deficits in EF are often considered a hallmark of ADHD. We may observe these deficits in the form of procrastination, tardiness, time management, task-planning difficulty, organizational issues, and forgetfulness. While medication can vastly improve academic performance, attention, retention, and behavioral issues, it often fails to influence these very important daily issues. When these issues aren’t resolved, they can impede school and work performance and create conflict at home.

Over the past 3 decades, researchers have discovered that EF deficits can improve through instruction and practice. The evidence supporting interventions for organizational difficulties is compelling, as it has enabled countless children, adolescents, and adults to achieve and maintain specific goals related to EF. In addition to providing psychopharmacological and therapeutic interventions to reduce ADHD symptoms and improve overall functioning, FamilyHealth Associates is proud of offer a customized EF program as part of our commitment to integrated and collaborative care. Collaborating with other FamilyHealth Associates clinicians, a dedicated therapist will work with family members and teachers in the office, home, at school, online, and over the phone to provide continuous support. We feel that our EF program is an important element in the comprehensive treatment of ADHD and in improving the overall wellbeing of our patients.

  • If individual behavior modification is recommended, treatment may be arranged with one of our professionals who are specifically trained to work with issues of attention, mood, behavior, and other disorders.

  • Appointments are reserved for you or your child. We do not “double book”. Therefore, if you need to cancel an appointment, we require at least 24 hours’ notice prior to your scheduled time. If we do not receive 24 hour advance notice of cancellation, you will be charged for the time allotted at the regular rate. This applies to in person and/or virtual appointments.

For additional information please see our Cancellation & No Show Policy section below.

  • We recognize that a brief email or phone conversation with a clinician is part of the ongoing treatment process. However, we believe they are not adequate replacements for face to face contact. We encourage you to discuss any issues in person at the office.

Calls lasting 15 minutes or longer are charged at the in-office rate. Please note that insurance companies do not reimburse for telephone calls.

  • You can contact your clinician during normal office hours, but in the event of a medical emergency, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room.

  • Familyhealth Associates is HIPPA compliant. Medical information is not released without prior written authorization of the patient. If the patient is under 18 years old, we require written authorization of a parent. If the child’s parents are legally separated or divorced, we require the consent of the custodial parent. This policy extends to oral conversations with school personnel, physicians or any other professionals involved in the patient’s care.

In addition, please note that when insurance companies or legal entities request your medical information, we are compelled to release ALL INFORMATION IN YOUR FILE. Legally, we cannot withhold specific material. Alternatively, we may inform them that you have not given (or have withdrawn) consent. If you have any questions or concerns in this regard, you may contact Dr. Catie Stern, who is the staff HIPPA Officer.

  • We strongly believe that the use of all medications requires careful monitoring by a physician. For this reason, pharmacological patients who have not been seen in this office by a physician for a period of six months or more are not considered patients of this practice. We will not be responsible for any patient who has not been seen in the office within the past six months.

If the relationship is terminated for this or any other reason, we remain available on an interim basis to handle any emergency situations until a new physician is engaged. At your request, we will provide you with a list of alternative physicians, clinics, and hospitals.

Upon receipt of appropriate written authorizations, we will forward your records to the another health care provider.

Cancellation & No-Show Policy

When scheduling your appointment, we set aside enough time to provide you with the highest quality care. We strive to provide excellent medical care to you and to all of our patients. Consistent with this, we have developed appointment cancellation and no-show policies that allow us to better schedule appointments for all patients. When an appointment is scheduled, that time has been specifically reserved for you and when it is missed that time cannot be used to treat another patient in need of care. We sincerely appreciate your assistance and cooperation as this allows for a smooth office flow and more efficiently uses your time.

Should you need to cancel or reschedule, please contact our office as soon as possible, and no later than twenty four hours prior to your scheduled appointment. This gives us time to schedule other patients who may be waiting for an appointment. If you cancel with less than 24-hour notice, or fail to show for your appointment, you will be charged your normal fee.
